A vase in the shape of a poppy after flowering — the moment when the bloom gathers strength to form its seeds.
The piece is made using the sgraffito technique — every line is hand-carved through orange clay, then filled with purple and yellow, as if the veins of a petal have come alive. The radial lines spread from the central opening to the ruffled edges — a precise, rhythmic composition that recalls a seed pod seen from above. The rounded body carries the same hand-carved motif. Fully glazed. Hand-formed, one of a kind.
Maker’s note
Organic, flowing forms are especially close to me in my work. I often make references to nature and draw inspiration from the objects around me — particularly flowers. The variety of bud forms gives endless possibilities to explore, and the plasticity of clay makes it the ideal material to adapt them. Poppy Head is an attempt to capture a specific moment in a natural cycle — not in full bloom, but just after.
